Dr. Foley Walk for Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic, lifelong condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. According to the Canadian Diabetes Association,

The cause of type 1 diabetes remains unknown. It is not caused by eating too much sugar, and is not preventable. The current thought is that type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system destroys the cells that make insulin.

JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research, and Dr. Foley and our London, ON team are proud to support the important work they do. Working towards a cure for T1D holds a special place in our hearts, as we have family members and patients who suffer from this condition.

For the fourth consecutive year, our team is participating in the JDRF walk Sunday, June 8th at the University of Western Ontario, to raise funds for research to cure, better treat, and eventually prevent type 1 diabetes. Look for the Foley t-shirts and say hi!

Did you know…?

  • Over 300,000 Canadian children and adults live with type 1 diabetes (T1D). T1D is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food.
  • T1D is a leading cause of life-threatening and debilitating complications, such as blindness, kidney disease, nerve damage, heart attack, stroke, amputation, and even death.
  • Canada has one of the highest incidence rates of T1D for children under 14 years of age. The fastest growing segment is occurring in children under the age of five.

Living with T1D is a constant challenge. People with the disease must carefully balance insulin doses (either by injections multiple times a day or continuous infusion through a pump) with eating and daily activities throughout the day and night. They must also test their blood sugar by poking their fingers for blood four or more times a day. Despite this constant attention, people with T1D still run the risk of dangerous high or low blood sugar levels, both of which can be life-threatening.
