The first week of having braces can be a big adjustment for patients, but as time goes on, dealing with your new orthodontics will become second nature. To make sure the first several days of having braces go smoothly, we’ve covered a few of the basics below to help get you through your first week.
1. Treat Your Braces Discomfort at Home
Your braces are going to significantly improve how your teeth look, but your stellar smile may come with some discomfort. This is especially true during the first 3-5 days after you get your braces on. We recommend having some over-the-counter pain reliever on hand to reduce any soreness you may experience.
Saltwater rinses a few times a day can also provide some temporary relief. To do this, dissolve a teaspoon of salt in lukewarm water and swish it around in your mouth before you spit it out. Repeat as needed.
2. Use Orthodontic Wax
To help prevent your braces from rubbing against your cheeks, make sure you use your orthodontic wax. Don’t wait until you have already rubbed a raw spot into your cheek: liberally apply wax right away to avoid soreness.
3. Stick to Soft Foods
Wondering what to eat during your first week of having braces? It’s important to stick to soft foods for the first week or so after the procedure since your teeth will be hypersensitive. To make sure you’re not stuck with soup, it’s a good idea to stock up on soft foods you enjoy before you get your braces on. Some patient favourites include mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and pasta. Once the soreness starts to go away you can start incorporating more solid foods into your diet.
4. Keep Up with Your Dental Hygiene
Get into the habit of brushing your teeth after every meal with a soft bristled brush (read our blog on the best toothbrushes for braces). Food tends to get stuck in braces, so to avoid any future headaches (such as cavities), get into the habit early. You’ll also want to ensure you keep up with flossing daily.
5. Remember Why You Got Braces in the First Place
Your first few days of wearing braces can be a little uncomfortable which may discourage some patients. While you may experience some discomfort as your teeth adjust, the great way to get through it is to know that the discomfort is temporary and to focus on the end results.
