When Should My Child See an Orthodontist? – Wonder West Orthodontics

As your young child grows and his or her baby teeth make way for permanent teeth, it may be time for them to see an orthodontist. Orthodontics are practiced by a specialized dentist who aligns and straightens teeth.

But how do you know when it’s time for your child to see an orthodontist? The American Association of Orthodontists says that by the time children reach age 7, most future orthodontics issues can be predicted.

Signs That Your Child Should See an Orthodontist

Here are some orthodontic problems to consider that may suggest that it’s time to see an orthodontist:

1. Crowding & Spacing

Teeth crowding issues may require the removal of teeth or that the arches be expanded.

A baby tooth that was lost too early, teeth that aren’t the right size, or a tooth that never developed can cause spacing problems.

2. Underbite

While patients aren’t generally treated for underbites until they have stopped growing, an orthodontist will normalize the bite early on to prevent shifting and damaging of teeth.

3. Alignment

Crooked teeth may have uneven wear or damage, and the position of overlying gum issues may be compromised. While tooth alignment can occur at an older age, crooked teeth issues that are dealt with early on will have less of an effect on a child’s self-esteem.

4. Protrusive Front Teeth

By age 7 it will be clear whether a child’s front teeth protrude more than what’s comfortable and attractive. By addressing the issue early, the severity of the problem can be reduced early and is more likely to be permanently corrected when your child gets older.

5. Tooth Loss/Eruption

By age 7, your child should have four permanent molars and incisors. If they don’t, there may be a variety of issues with the teeth, including crowding. Primary tooth removal or securing a space where a tooth has been lost can prevent larger issues later.

6. Other Warning Signs

Some other signs that your child may need to see an orthodontist are persistent thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or difficulty chewing. If you notice these signs, you should see an orthodontist because they can lead to bigger issues later in life.

Commonly Asked Questions About Starting Orthodontic Treatment

When Should My Child See a Dentist?

You may be surprised to read that medical and dental professionals, across North America, recommend that children visit the dentist before they turn 1 – or within 6 months of their first primary tooth breaking through. This may seem early – and many parents are equally confounded – but it is essential to ensure your children’s teeth remain healthy and where they’re supposed to be, until they are naturally displaced.

At What Age Should My Child Have an Orthodontic Evaluation?

The time that your child needs to be seen for initial orthodontic evaluation depends not so much upon your child’s actual age, but on what is known as a “dental age.”

The dental age of the patient might be entirely different from his or her actual chronological age; for example, an eight-year-old could have a dental age of 13. It is part of our staff’s job to determine the dental age and then make appropriate recommendations for the resolution of orthodontic issues if they are emerging.

What is the Recommended Age to Beginning Orthodontic Treatment?

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists officially recommends that kids should see an orthodontist for the first time between the ages of seven and nine. Even if the child does not have all his or her permanent teeth, the teeth growth pattern can usually be predicted quite effectively by an orthodontist.

This allows for a proactive response to emerging problems, and this is the reason that some younger children are now getting orthodontic devices earlier in life. If a young child has serious orthodontic issues emerging, our orthodontists can usually address the problems immediately and then follow up with another round of treatment when the child has all the adult teeth.

When Should an Adult See and Orthodontist?

No matter how old you are, you deserve to feel great when you smile, so it’s never too late to discuss your treatment opportunities to achieve teeth you’ll want to show off. Additionally, orthodontic treatment can be an effective remedy for jaw alignment issues, regardless of the age of the patient.

While adults may be hesitant about beginning their orthodontic journey later in life, there are so many options for addressing your dental concerns that it’s worthwhile to explore them with an orthodontic professional. That way, you can be better informed about how to achieve the smile you want, in a way you’re most comfortable with.

Do You Need a Referral from Your Dentist to See an Orthodontist?

No: you are empowered to make this choice yourself and to look for an orthodontic professional who aligns with your vision for the type of treatment and TLC you hope to receive. However, that doesn’t mean we do not highly encourage you to regularly visit your dentist for proper oral care.

Booking annual dental appointments for your family is an essential component of maintaining the health of your mouth. Plus, your dentist can be a powerful advocate and partner throughout your orthodontic journey to ensure your teeth are as healthy as they will be beautifully straight.
