A Variety Braces Options to Suit Your Lifestyle
Today, metal braces are more comfortable than ever. They are still considered the most popular style and are made of high-grade stainless steel. This system uses brackets and archwires to straighten teeth. Brackets are applied directly to your teeth and wires are threaded through to apply light continuous pressure and shift teeth into place slowly.
Today’s traditional dental braces are much less noticeable than they once were and advancements in technology mean that this style of braces shift teeth alignment quicker than they did in the past. With metal braces, you also have the opportunity to add coloured rubber bands to the brackets to make them more personal.
Self-ligating also combines the use of brackets and wires to straighten teeth, however, do not require the use of rubber bands. This system uses doors and clips to hold onto the wire. This means fewer visits to the orthodontist and less discomfort in some cases as there is less pressure being applied to the teeth.
Ceramic braces are a popular style of braces for older teens and adults undergoing orthodontic treatments. They are made of ceramic materials and are designed to match the colour and shade of the patient’s tooth. They are far less visible than traditional metal braces and offer a more discrete solution to braces. They do, however, require more maintenance and caution than the other styles of braces, as they can easily be stained if not cleaned properly.
Invisalign is considered the most popular invisible aligner available. They are removable, clear acrylic trays that straighten your teeth with continued wear. They are considered more comfortable, and the ability to easily remove the aligners makes cleaning and maintaining them a breeze. Patients can remove the aligners to eat or drink, without worrying about staining or breaking a bracket.

The length of treatment can vary depending on the patient. Typically, treatments can last anywhere from six to thirty months, however, the average length of standard treatment is roughly 22 months.
Getting braces put on does not hurt, but you may feel some discomfort for the first few days. The discomfort is manageable, and your teeth, gums, cheeks and mouth will start to adjust to the new appliances over time.
To avoid the buildup of plaque and the development of cavities, you should be brushing your teeth at least three times a day. Food can easily get caught in your brackets and wires, so it’s important to keep the appliances clean.
Absolutely! Regular checkups every 6 months are important, especially when you are receiving orthodontic treatment. Food can easily get caught between your braces, causing a potential buildup of bacteria that can lead to issues such as gum disease, gingivitis and cavities. Your dentist can help monitor for these concerns and will work alongside your orthodontist to ensure your teeth stay clean throughout your orthodontic treatment
