How to Take Care of Retainers After Braces
Caring for your retainer and wearing one consistently is essential to maintain your new smile after your orthodontic treatment. Your treatment doesn’t stop after your braces have been removed. Why spend all that time, energy, and money to straighten your teeth when you don’t plan to keep them straightened after treatment? We at Wonder West Orthodontics have put together a list of tips on how to properly care for your retainer to ensure that your teeth stay in alignment for the long term.
Retainer Care Tips
How Often Should I Wear My Retainer?
Wear your removable retainer at all times, until your orthodontist instructs otherwise.
Can I Eat with My Retainer In?
Take your retainer out when eating, and always put it back in its case! (Most orthodontic appliances are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants.)
How Do I Clean My Retainer?
Clean the removable retainer thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and soap. Use warm but not hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque, and eliminates odors. Other orthodontic appliance cleaners can be used but do not replace brushing. Do not use a denture cleaner as it can weaken the solder joint of the Hawley-style retainers.
Where Should I Put My Retainer?
When your retainer is not in your mouth, it should ALWAYS be in its case. Pets love to chew on them!
Will it be Hard to Speak with a Retainer?
Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to your retainer faster.
What Should I do if I Break My Retainer?
Retainers are breakable, so treat yours with care. If your retainer gets lost or broken, call us immediately.
Can I Adjust My Own Retainer?
If you have any questions or concerns about your retainer, or you believe it needs adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust it yourself.
Should I bring my Retainer to My Orthodontic Appointment?
Always bring your retainer to your orthodontic appointments.
What Happens if I Need to Replace My Retainer?
Retainer replacements are expensive, but they will last for years with proper care!
Can I Wear My Retainer When Swimming?
Remove your retainer when you go swimming.
What Should I Keep Away from My Retainer?
Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, pets, the washing machine, and napkins.
