Braces treatment plan | Wonder West Orthodontics

Straightening your teeth with braces is a common orthodontic treatment that can result in a beautiful smile and improved bite. While the timeline for orthodontic treatment is unique to each patient, most cases are completed in one to three years with checkups every 6 to 8 weeks. People of all ages receive braces. While most are under 18 years old, about 25 percent of people with braces are adults.

But what does having braces mean?

Wonder West Orthodontics provides top-quality orthodontic care, including treatment plans with braces. If you are considering getting braces to achieve a straighter smile, here is what you can expect from a typical treatment plan at Wonder West Orthodontics:

Step 1: Consultation

The first step in your orthodontic journey will be an initial consultation with one of our orthodontists. First, photographs and x-rays will be taken, and a review of your medical and dental history will be performed. Then, during this appointment, you will have a comprehensive examination of your teeth and bite. The orthodontist will explain if treatment is needed, review your treatment goals and treatment options, to create a customized treatment plan tailored to your unique smile.

Step 2: Braces Placement

Before placement of braces, the surfaces of your teeth are cleaned, and a priming agent is placed before bonding the brackets with an orthodontic adhesive. After the brackets are set in position, an archwire is threaded through the brackets and secured into placed with elastic ligatures. The whole process typically takes 1-1.5 hours.

Step 3: Regular Adjustments and Checkups

You will need to visit Wonder West Orthodontics for regular adjustments. During these appointments, your orthodontist will check that your teeth are moving properly, and the wires will be changed or adjusted. New elastics or rubber bands may be added as your treatment progresses. Appointments are important to keep your orthodontic treatment progressing efficiently.

Step 4: Removing Braces

When the day comes, your braces and wires will be gently removed, and your teeth will be cleaned and polished. Final photographs of your teeth will be taken, then get ready to show off your new smile! After this appointment, it is recommended that you see your general dentist for a check-up.

Step 5: Retainer Fitting

Once your braces are removed, your orthodontic journey isn’t quite over – retainers play a critical role in maintaining your new smile. Custom-fit removable retainers will be provided. After your braces come off, you’ll need to wear your retainer full-time for a period of time (typically between 6 months and a year). This means wearing it day and night, only removing it to eat, brush, and floss. This helps your teeth stabilize in their new positions. After that, you’ll switch to wearing it at night only – indefinitely. Nighttime wear is essential to prevent your teeth from slowly shifting over time.
