These small elastic rings are only in place for a short time, but they play an important role in preparing your teeth for the next step of treatment. What Do Spacers Do?
Spacers, also called separators, are small elastic rings placed between your back teeth. Most patients don’t have natural gaps between their molars, so spacers gently push teeth apart to create just enough room. This space is needed so we can fit orthodontic bands, which wrap around your molars like small rings, during your next visit.
What Will Spacers Feel Like?
Spacers are typically worn for about 7-10 days. You may feel:
- Mild pressure or soreness, especially in the first few days
- A “bouncy” sensation when biting down
- A sensation similar to food or floss stuck between your teeth
This is all a normal sign that your teeth are shifting to make room for the next step of orthodontic treatment.
Caring for Your Spacers
A few simple habits go a long way while you’re wearing spacers:
- Don’t pick at them with your fingers or floss around them
- Avoid sticky or chewy foods like gum, caramel, or taffy
- Stick to softer foods if you’re feeling sore
- Brush gently around the area as usual
If a Spacer Falls Out
It’s okay if a spacer feels loose, as long as it’s still in place. If a separator falls out, don’t panic. In many cases, it may mean that enough space has already been created. Managing Discomfort
Mild soreness is normal as your teeth adjust. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help if needed, following the recommended dosage.
